2.2 - The Operator’s Goal is to Grow Earnings

Business success or wealth is created by converting materials into products of greater value. The operator creates wealth by converting the material to greater value. The operator’s goal is directly related to business success. The operator’s goal must be clearly defined in pieces or dollars per hour. The goal of the operator is to achieve the maximum production output.

The greatest opportunity for a business to grow earnings is to help each operator produce the largest amount of quality product. In making it easier for operators to help the team win the operator increased the production speed from 20 pieces to 80 pieces per hour. Each operator must keep a score of their hourly production and identify areas where they need help with lost time and defects. This ultimately will improve their job satisfaction, and they will become more productive for your company. The operator will need the help of the manufacturing team to overcome obstacles causing lost time and defective products. Teaching a consistent approach collaboratively is a hallmark of strong leadership and acknowledges the operator as the most important asset to the business.

It can be tempting for business leaders to look toward new machines and automated processes when faced with stagnant, or even declining production. The most attractive solution is the one that requires the least effort. Business leaders may not see the value of teaching to improve production output and earnings or may just not think about it as their job. However, investing in operators is the true answer to the problem.
